Immersion
Referring to an environment which is continuously submerged in a liquid
Immiscible
Incapable of being blended
Impact Resistance
The ability to resist deformation or cracking due to a forceful blow
Induction Time
The period of time between mixing of two components and the time they can be used. In general two pack polyurethanes may be used immediately after mixing, whereas two pack epoxy coatings should be allowed ten to fifteen minutes before use
Inert Pigment
A non reactive pigment, filler or extender
Inhibitive Pigment
A pigment which assists in the prevention of the corrosion process. For example zinc chromate and zinc phosphate
Inhibitor
Material such as primer used to retard rusting or corrosion
Inorganic
The designation of compounds that do not contain carbon
Inorganic Zinc
A coating based on a silicate resin and pigmented with metallic zinc which has excellent resistance to organic solvents, abrasion and general weathering
Insoluble
A substance that will not dissolve in water or solvent
Intercoat Adhesion
The adhesion between two coats of paint
Intermediate Coat
The coating between the primer and finish, often called a barrier coat
Intumescent Coating
A fire retarding coating which, when heated, produces non flammable gases which are trapped by the film, converting it to a foam, thereby insulating the substrate. This prevents buckling and failure of the underlying steel substrate
Iron Oxide
An oxide of iron. This is the natural state of steel. Steel is produced from iron oxide, and upon corrosion the product reverts to iron oxide - also known as rust
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
A volatile, flammable solvent
