3. Product Description

BASIC USE AND APPLICATIONS

Interpon D1000 Series Powder Coatings
has
provided exterior and interior durability on buildings around the world for over 40 years. It is designed to meet the requirements of the AAMA 2603 standard.

Interpon D1000 powders are available in a wide range of standard and custom solid colors and 15 metallic effect shades, in gloss, satin, and matt sheen levels.

BENEFITS

Interpon D1000 powder coatings are
cost effective and solvent free solutions to exterior and interior coating requirements. Powder coatings offer abrasion and weathering resistance. Powder coating application technology eliminates VOC emissions, provides a significantly lower waste stream compared with shop-applied liquid coatings.

REFERENCED STANDARDS

American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA):

·       AAMA 2603 - Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Pigmented Organic Coatings on Aluminum Extrusions and Panels

ASTM International (ASTM):

·       ASTM B 117 – Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus

·       ASTM D 523 – Standard Test Method for Specular Gloss

·       ASTM D 968 – Standard Test Methods for Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings by Falling Abrasive

·       ASTM D 2247 – Standard Practice for Testing Water Resistance of Coatings in 100% Relative Humidity

PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

The AAMA 2603 test results shown below are based on mechanical and chemical tests which (unless otherwise indicated) have been carried out under laboratory conditions on a one-coat dry system at 2.4 to 3.2 mils thickness over a chromate-treated aluminum substrate and are given for guidance only. Actual powder coating performance depends upon the circumstances under which the product is applied and used.

·       Specular Gloss: AAMA 2603: Pass; values within +/- 5 units of specification per ASTM D 523

·       Dry Film Hardness, AAMA 2603: Pass H minimum per ASTM D 3363

·       Dry Adhesion, AAMA 2603: Pass; no film removal

·       Wet Adhesion: AAMA 2603: Pass, no blistering

·       Impact Resistance, AAMA 2603: Pass; no tape removal of film to substrate following 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) deformation

·       Abrasion Resistance, AAMA 2603: Pass; abrasion coefficient >20 per ASTM D 968

·       Chemical Resistance:  Generally good resistance to acids, alkalis and oils at normal temperature

·       Muriatic Acid Test: AAMA 2603: Pass, no blistering or visual change in appearance

·       Mortar Resistance, AAMA 2603, 24-hr Pat Test: Pass; no loss of film or visual change in appearance

·       Detergent Resistance, AAMA 2603: Pass, no blistering, no adhesion loss

·       Humidity Resistance, AAMA 2603: Pass at 1500 hours - blister formation less than "few" size no. 8 per ASTM D 2247

·       Salt Spray Resistance, AAMA 2603:  Pass at 1500 hours at 35 deg. C; creepage from scribe rating 7; blister rating 8, per ASTM B 117

·       Weathering: 1 year Florida Exposure, AAMA 2603: No checking, crazing, or loss of adhesion, with only slight chalking and fading.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN BENEFITS

·
No solvent emission

·       Lead-, heavy-metal-, and TGIC- free product

·       Recyclable and reclaimable in powder form as part of application process

·       No polluting emission when aluminum substrate is recycled

·       Enhanced durability reduces need for field-applied recoating

5. Application

ALUMINUM SUBSTRATE

Interpon D1000 should only be applied to virgin, mill finish architectural grade aluminum. Acceptable alloys include AA6060 (AlMgSi 0.5), AA6063, AA5005, AA5053 or suitable equivalents.

Recycled, stripped or low quality aluminum can lead to reduced corrosion resistance in service in certain applications. In particular, high levels of iron, copper or carbon contamination can increase the risk of filiform corrosion in marine or industrial atmospheres.

PRETREATMENT

For maximum protection it is essential to pre-treat components to AAMA specifications prior to the application of Interpon D1000. Aluminum components must receive a full multi-stage chromate conversion coating or suitable chrome-free pre-treatment to clean and condition the substrate. Detailed advice should be sought from the pre-treatment supplier.

APPLICATION

Interpon D1000 can be applied by manual or automatic electrostatic spray equipment.  For solid shades, unused powder can be reclaimed using suitable equipment and recycled through the coating system.  For mixed colors and certain special finishes, advice must be sought from the manufacturer, as to the suitability or otherwise of the product for recycling. For all mixed color/special effect systems, advice must be sought as to the correct mixing ratio for virgin/reclaim powder.

PROTECTION OF COATED PRODUCTS

Interpon D1000 is a tough, durable coating, but it is advisable to protect coated products that are subject to damage which may occur during fabrication, shipping and handling, or installation. Corner protection of window and door units is recommended.  Damage that does occur should be immediately repaired using AkzoNobel's recommended repair procedures, preferable prior to installation.

STORAGE AND HANDLING OF COATED PRODUCTS

Store and handle products according to manufacturer's written recommendations.  Avoid contacting coated surfaces with adhesive shipping tapes.

SEALANTS AND MASTICS

The application of sealants, mastics and structural glazing adhesives to powder coated aluminum components is widespread and well established.

Compatibility testing is generally available through the manufacturers of sealants, mastics and structural glazing adhesives.

6. Availability

AkzoNobel Interpon Powder Coatings are manufactured at more than 25 locations in 20 countries on 5 continents.  They are available through approved applicators worldwide; contact AkzoNobel Powder Coatings for local contact information.

7. Warranty

APPROVED APPLICATOR WARRANTY PROGRAM

Extended applicator warranties up to 5 years are available from AkzoNobel's Approved Applicators.  Approved Applicators utilize a Quality Management System meeting AAMA and ISO9002 standards.  AkzoNobel Powder Coatings carries out periodic and random checks for applicator approval.  Contact applicators for details of available warranties.

8. Maintenance

Interpon D1000 is naturally resistant to chemicals and solvents.  This reduces soiling; dirt will not readily adhere and consequently cleaning in service is reduced.

CLEANING METHODS

Usual maintenance of Interpon D products can be performed with an appropriate cleaning product, followed by clear water rinsing and wiping using a soft cloth.  All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge, using nothing harsher than natural bristle brushes.

If the project is subject to any hazardous unusual environmental factors, or is close to salt water, an estuary or marine environments then AkzoNobel must be consulted on an individual project basis.

CLEANING PRODUCTS

Prior to cleaning, review cleaning agent datasheet.  Perform routine maintenance using water with mild detergent (pH 5 to 8).  For stains or marks, stronger cleaning products such as products based of alcohol, petroleum spirits, white spirit, or bleach (diluted to 5%) may be selectively applied.  Rinse the Interpon D coating immediately after the cleaning product has been used.

In no circumstance should abrasive cleaner or polish, or any cleaner containing ketones or esters be used.
