3. Product Description
BASIC USE AND APPLICATIONS
Interpon D2000 Series Powder Coatings is the original ultra-durable architectural powder coating product family. D2000 has provided outstanding exterior durability on buildings around the world. It is designed to meet the requirements of the AAMA 2604 Florida 5-year exposure test.
Interpon D2000 Series products have more than 10 years track record on architectural projects. It offers significantly improved gloss retention and resistance to chalking and fading compared to traditional polyester powder coatings. With D2000, long term cosmetic and functional protection on buildings is ensured, even in the most demanding environments.
Interpon D2000 powders are available in 31 standard solid colors and 15 metallic effect shades, in gloss, satin, and matt sheen levels.
BENEFITS
Interpon D2000 ultra-durable powder coatings are cost effective and solvent free solutions to exterior and interior coating requirements. Powder coatings offer superior abrasion and weathering resistance, even in corrosive atmospheres. Powder coating application technology eliminates VOC emissions, provides a significantly lower waste stream compared with shop-applied liquid coatings.

5. Application
ALUMINUM SUBSTRATE
Interpon D2000 should only be applied to virgin, mill finish architectural grade aluminum. Acceptable alloys include AA6060 (AlMgSi 0.5), AA6063, AA5005, AA5053 or suitable equivalents.
Recycled, stripped or low quality aluminum can lead to reduced corrosion resistance in service in certain applications. In particular, high levels of iron, copper or carbon contamination can increase the risk of filiform corrosion in marine or industrial atmospheres.
PRETREATMENT
For maximum protection it is essential to pre-treat components to AAMA specifications prior to the application of Interpon D2000. Aluminum components must receive a full multi-stage chromate conversion coating or suitable chrome-free pre-treatment to clean and condition the substrate. Detailed advice should be sought from the pre-treatment supplier.
APPLICATION
Interpon D2000 can be applied by manual or automatic electrostatic spray equipment. For solid shades, unused powder can be reclaimed using suitable equipment and recycled through the coating system. For mixed colors and certain special finishes, advice must be sought from the manufacturer, as to the suitability or otherwise of the product for recycling. For all mixed color/special effect systems, advice must be sought as to the correct mixing ratio for virgin/reclaim powder.
PROTECTION OF COATED PRODUCTS
Interpon D2000 is a tough, durable coating, but it is advisable to protect coated products that are subject to damage which may occur during fabrication, shipping and handling, or installation. Corner protection of window and door units is recommended. Damage that does occur should be immediately repaired using AkzoNobel's recommended repair procedures, preferable prior to installation.
STORAGE AND HANDLING OF COATED PRODUCTS
Store and handle products according to manufacturer's written recommendations. Avoid contacting coated surfaces with adhesive shipping tapes.
SEALANTS AND MASTICS
The application of sealants, mastics and structural glazing adhesives to powder coated aluminum components is widespread and well established.
Compatibility testing is generally available through the manufacturers of sealants, mastics and structural glazing adhesives.
6. Availability
AkzoNobel Interpon Powder Coatings are manufactured at more than 25 locations in 20 countries on 5 continents. They are available through approved applicators worldwide; contact AkzoNobel Powder Coatings for local contact information.
7. Warranty
APPROVED APPLICATOR WARRANTY PROGRAM
Extended applicator warranties up to 10 years are available from AkzoNobel's Approved Applicators. Approved Applicators utilize a Quality Management System meeting AAMA and ISO9002 standards. AkzoNobel Powder Coatings carries out periodic and random checks for applicator approval. Contact applicators for details of available warranties.
8. Maintenance
Interpon D2000 is naturally resistant to chemicals and solvents. This reduces soiling; dirt will not readily adhere and consequently cleaning in service is reduced.
CLEANING METHODS
Usual maintenance of Interpon D products can be performed with an appropriate cleaning product, followed by clear water rinsing and wiping using a soft cloth. All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge, using nothing harsher than natural bristle brushes.
If the project is subject to any hazardous unusual environmental factors, or is close to salt water, an estuary or marine environments then AkzoNobel must be consulted on an individual project basis.
CLEANING PRODUCTS
Prior to cleaning, review cleaning agent datasheet. Perform routine maintenance using water with mild detergent (pH 5 to 8). For stains or marks, stronger cleaning products such as products based of alcohol, petroleum spirits, white spirit, or bleach (diluted to 5%) may be selectively applied. Rinse the Interpon D coating immediately after the cleaning product has been used.
In no circumstance should abrasive cleaner or polish, or any cleaner containing ketones or esters be used.
