New dawn rises with AkzoNobel’s 2020 Color of the Year

Tranquil Dawn, a delicate green shade, is AkzoNobel’s Color of the Year for 2020. The culmination of extensive trend research by experts around the world, it’s designed to capture the essence of what makes us human as the dawn of a new decade arrives – and it’s been translated into colors and finishes specific to the powder coatings market.

Design and color specialists across the company use the trends to produce colors and finishes that meet customer needs beyond decorative paints to wood, automotive, specialty and powder coatings.

Jean-Paul Moonen, Color Marketing Manager for AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business, says: “We use the year’s trend research to create corresponding powder coating color palettes across various segments. That way we’re able to offer our customers curated, on-trend colors. The trend insights also form the basis for the ongoing update cycles to our Futura range. To channel Tranquil Dawn’s ambiance for powder coatings we have chosen Silver Star for interiors, and Gris 2150 Sable for exteriors.”

That means Silver Star and Gris 2150 Sable and their corresponding trend research data and color palettes will be influencing key powder coatings in the Industrial and Consumer market segments. Furniture in the office, school or outdoor gardens – such as tables, chairs, filing cabinets, and lockers – helps accent and complement rooms to make a strong design statement. Likewise, designers and manufacturers of aluminum windows and doors will be looking to take advantage of color trends by adopting new colors from Interpon into their ranges.

The Color of the Year has a place in all four of the company’s ColourFutures 2020 palettes: The Care Palette, The Play Palette, The Meaning Palette, and The Creativity Palette. They’re all designed to empower and inspire customers and make it easier to choose color with confidence.

The more exuberant powder coating finishes are well-suited for interiors, such as in architecture and furniture, while the more neutral shades have even more exterior applications. But overall, the trends are indicating an increased demand for brightly colored powder coatings in outside environments.

Powder coatings offer appealing benefits to our customers in architecture. In addition to being a more sustainable option, which architects and specifiers are looking for, they boast durability of up to 30 years – and come in a variety of colors and on-trend matt and low-gloss textures. This is especially important for architects looking to create a unique and lasting statement.

AkzoNobel is a global expert in identifying global trends and creating exciting color palettes with the power to express personality, enrich culture, and help transform living spaces and working environments.
