Due to the external frame of the stadium resembling willow leaves, the Jinan Olympic Centre is known locally as Xiliu or 'West Willow'. It has a capacity of 60,000 people and a construction area of 131,000 square metres. This made it an ideal venue in 2009, for the 11th national games of the PR of China, where the stadium was used for the opening ceremony, football matches and athletics events.
