Powder coatings color matching needs special techniques

For any color, hundreds of different shades of tints can be achieved. Human eyes do not have the same sensitivity to all colors. Electronic measuring devices perceive color differences across the spectrum similarly. However human eyes are particularly sensitive to variations in white which means that color matching within white spectrum is very difficult. Yes, you just read it right! Universal symbol of purity ‘white’ is the most difficult when it comes to color match.

Colors in coatings are created with combinations of chemical pigments to the base formulation. This is the first step for the color in the powder manufacturing process. These pigments mimic the world’s natural color pallets. A computer works out the combinations and concentrations of different pigments needed to produce specific colors. It can predict colors to a high degree of accuracy over a very wide range. When we try to achieve a new color, we can choose the nearest approximation and then customize it as necessary to match the requirement. A final visual assessment is always made by one of our experienced technicians inside a light cabinet before approving the match.

Colors can be tailor made for customers, as per their provided samples and specified requests. These can vary from liquid painting samples to colored paper, even to bits of bicycle. Some colors take longer than others to match. At times it is difficult to create very strong color match such as bright yellow, purple and red. It is due to the impact the pigments may have on the properties or on the coating. Our team finds a way of achieving the color without losing performance characteristics such as durability, flow and temperature resistance.

Special effects paints such as metallic or sparkles are also tricky. As these are not solid colors and the appearance can change dramatically depending on the angle the color is being viewed from. We continue to push the boundaries where and how powder coating can be used. This in turn requires extensive development of the color matching process.

Additionally, new pigments and new techniques lead to great color effects which increases the size of our pallet. Whatever your color needs are, however difficult or unusual, ask us. We are always interested in new challenges!
